"In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years". Abraham Lincoln

After what seemed like a never-ending winter season, summer is welcomed with open arms. I always look forward to the time when the air gets warmer, people are in happier spirits, and everything around me is in full blossom. Typically this is the time when I start planning my weekend staycations.

There are so many breath-taking countryside locations in the UK that choosing one can be a challenge in itself. My latest staycation didn’t disappoint me. Set on the borders of Sussex and Surrey, surrounded by 120 acres of countryside estate and perfectly maintained gardens, the five-star luxurious in every aspect Alexander House hotel was a fantastic choice for the first staycation of the year.

This is a hotel with history. The Alexander House Hotel property dates back to the 17th century. One stone that now stands proud in the luxurious 1608 Champagne Bar dates all the way back to 1608!

The house is famous for its connections to poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and the former Governor of the Bank of England who purchased the estate in 1909. The property was bought by its current owners in 2006 and it went through an 18-month redecoration process transforming Alexander House into the elegant, luxurious hotel it is today.

In 2012, AA awarded the hotel with a 5 star status, making Alexander House Hotel & Utopia Spa one of the highest rated hotels outside of London.

At Alexander House Hotel & Utopia Spa, too much is never enough. From chocolate dipped strawberries to rose petals and candles that really set the mood, all you need to do is ask!

The hotel has some amazing rooms and suites. Each room is individually designed, think modern finishes, classic charm and a sense of warmth, some with great outdoor terraces.

The Cedar Lodge Suites, completed in 2015, spread from 52 square meters to a full duplex suite. Surrounded by manicured gardens, each suite with its own south-facing private balcony or terrace, which is perfect for enjoying an al fresco breakfast in the sunshine during the summer months.

We stayed at the private two-bedroom luxury suite in the Gatehouse, a fully serviced luxury apartment that can sleep up to four guests. The Gatehouse sits at the edge of our 120 acre estate, offering total privacy and the perfect destination for a group getaway.

The Utopia Spa at Alexander House Hotel is absolutely divine and it’s famed for its spectacular interiors, personable service and an award-winning Utopia Spa. Featuring 25 treatment rooms including three couple’s treatment rooms, relaxation lounges, a bespoke outdoor barrel sauna and hot tub the SPA is designed to take away life’s everyday stresses.

The spa is set with mood lighting, relaxation spaces and Grecian themed design. This together with features such as the therapy pool, indoor and outdoor bubble tubs, saunas and steam rooms, compels guests to slip into a state of utter tranquillity.

Alexander House boasts a range of dining experiences from a sophisticated 3 AA Rosette AG’s to the more informal casual every dining 2 AA Rosette Reflections.

Their sparkling 1608 Champagne Bar will take your breath away with its 145 wines, 30 hand-picked Champagnes and a wide range of unique cocktails using only the finest ingredients.

For a proper British experience, you need to try their afternoon tea, which can be taken in the gardens or drawing room. All desserts are handmade by in-house pastry chefs, sandwiches are served on beautiful homemade bread and all of their preserves are created in-house.

If you’re looking for a more active approach, you can use the state-of-the-art gym, indulge in a yoga class or enjoy outdoor activities including tennis court, bike hire, trekking trail and garden games.

I really enjoyed playing giant chess and even a bit of croquet.

I say: it’s about time for a break to West Sussex!
